Talking bout Fibroadenoma

What is Fibroadenoma?

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumor of the breast and the most common breast tumor in women under age 30.

A fibroadenoma is made up of breast gland tissue and tissue that helps support the breast gland tissue.

Black women tend to develop fibroadenomas more often and at an earlier age than white women. The cause of fibroadenomas is not known.

Symptoms

Fibroadenomas are usually single lumps, but about 10 - 15% of women have several lumps that may affect both breasts.

Lumps may be:

• Easily moveable under the skin

• Firm

• Painless

• Rubbery

They have smooth, well-defined borders. They may grow in size, especially during pregnancy. Fibroadenomas often get smaller after menopause (if a woman is not taking hormone replacement therapy).

Signs and tests

After a physical examination, one or both of the following tests are usually done:

• Breast ultrasound

• Mammogram

A core needle biopsy may be done to get a definite diagnosis. Women in their teens or early 20s may not need a biopsy if the lump goes away on its own or if the lump does not change over a long period of time.

Treatment

If a biopsy shows that the lump is a fibroadenoma, the lump may be left in place or removed.

The decision to remove the lump is made by the patient and the surgeon. Reasons to have it removed include:

• Abnormal biopsy results

• Pain or other symptoms occur

• Worry or concern about cancer

If the lump is not removed, your health care provider will watch to see if it changes or grows. This may be done using

• Mammogram

• Physical examination

• Ultrasound

Sometimes, the lump may be destroyed without removing it, using freezing. This is called cryoablation.

Expectations (prognosis)

Women with fibroadenoma have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer later in life. Lumps that are not removed should be checked regularly by physical exams and imaging tests, following the doctor's recommendations.

Complications

If the lump is left in place and carefully watched, it may need to be removed at a later time if it changes or grows.

In very rare cases, the lump may be cancer. You may need further treatment.

My uvula

Dear Ask The Doctor: I noticed tonight that my uvula deviates to the left. I don't spend much time looking at it, so I'd never noticed it before. There are no oropharyngeal masses or tonsilar inflammation. I know uvular deviation can indicate a vagus motor lesion, but I am not experiencing any associated symptoms. I am wondering if this is something I should be concerned about or if there are cases of nonpathological uvular deviation?

Dear Erin: The uvula is innervated by the vagus nerve (Cranial Nerve X). Deviation of the uvula to one side implies a lower motor lesion of the vagus nerve opposite to the side the uvula is deviating to. An upper motor neuron vagus nerve lesion will present with the uvula deviating toward the side of the lesion. I would advise attending your family physician for history of any associated symptoms (difficulty swallowing, speech problems, nasal regurgitation, hoarseness) and physical examination including cranial nerve examination and testing the gag reflex, which is innervated by the vagus nerve, to identify any cranial nerve pathology and investigation as appropriate.

today from 9.30 - 12.40 discussing the past years paper for ethics & legal medicine. by 1130 my brain was already concentrated.

Bismillah. Alhamdulillah... selamat pagi ^^

sedang mencari mood dan aura forensic & legal medicine yang kursusnya akan bermula pada hari ini. Nak baca lecture notes yang diberi tapi, bullet point yang tersangatlah pendek sangatlah tidak memberi kefahaman apatah lagi motivasi untuk meneruskan pembacaan.

Huh. Maka pagi ini jemari ini sekadar menaip "FORENSIC and LEGAL MEDICINE" di ruangan google. Ow, tambah sedikit "MALAYSIA" di hujungnya.

Tutttt. Tiba terpapar satu nama

eh, urm. ni macam nama salah satu lecturer yang ada terbaca dalam booklet yang diberi. Owh, menarik. Sebelum ini sy membayangkan siapakah agaknya dr yang bernama Denis ni. Mungkin bangsa Cina kacukan, ke. hehehe. Nampaknya beliau adalah bangsa Eropah, yang turun ke malaysia untuk mengajar kami tentang Legal Medicine. Ouh... belajar dengan mat salleh Ireland lah nampaknya..huhuhu

Graduated Medical Doctor, University College Dublin School of Medicine, 1980 (Honours).

Fakta di atas tu, menarik perhatian sy. Beliau seorang gaduan UCD =) bagusnya ada "Honours" tu... hmmm...bolehkah sy nak dapat honours tu sekali. huhuhu.
